Former Legon Cities goalkeeper, William Essu, has passed away at the University of Cape Coast Hospital in the Central Region at the age of 22.
According to reports, Essu was rushed to the hospital on Friday and underwent a series of tests after falling ill. Despite showing improvement on Saturday afternoon, he suffered a relapse in the evening and was pronounced dead by doctors.
The cause of his illness was never determined. Essu’s death marks the second time in less than a year that Legon Cities has lost a goalkeeper. In September 2023, Sylvester Sackey also passed away.
The late goalkeeper was a member of Ghana’s U-23 team that qualified for the AFCON in Morocco last year. Amid his illness, Essu had appealed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to pay his outstanding bonuses to help cover his medical expenses, but sadly, he passed away without receiving the funds owed to him for his service to the country.
Essu’s death is a devastating loss for the Ghanaian football community and his family.
