Former FC Samartex goalkeeper Richard Baidoo has weighed in on the ongoing debate about the minimum salary for players in the Ghana Premier League, proposing a minimum wage of GHc3,000
The issue of funding is a major concern in the Ghanaian topflight, with clubs struggling to pay the salaries of their players. Many players receive less than GHc500 per month, which is a far cry from what professionals in their field deserve.
The current minimum salary in the league is reportedly around GHc500 ($32), which is a meager sum for players who are considered professionals.
Baidoo, who has first-hand experience playing in the Ghana Premier League with Hearts of Oak, Karela United, and Samartex, believes that the minimum salary should be significantly higher.
“There’s no sponsorship for the league, so when you make certain demands, you’d be told it’s too huge. Even what the clubs are getting from the sponsorship money isn’t enough, but the clubs are rather trying their best for the players.
“But in my opinion, the lowest or average salary after taking the signing-on fee should be GHc2,000, but without the signing-on fee, it should be between Ghc3,500 to 4,000. The lowest salary in the league should be GHc3,000, and we will be okay,” he told Ghanasportspage.com.
The upcoming Ghana Premier League season is set to kick off in September.
