Nana Sarfo Oduro, an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has revealed that negotiations are nearing completion for the return of Chinese-owned pay-TV operator, StarTimes, as the official broadcaster of the Ghana Premier League.
StarTimes, who previously held the broadcast rights for the league, has been absent from airing Ghana’s top-flight football due to outstanding debts of nearly $1 million.
However, Sarfo Oduro, speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, expressed optimism that the deal would be finalized soon. “We are almost closing up with StarTimes, and it is likely they will return in the second round to broadcast our games,” Sarfo Oduro said.
The return of StarTimes is expected to boost the league’s media presence and provide fans worldwide with better access to games. Additionally, the company is anticipated to also broadcast the FA Cup matches.
Since the shift to free-to-air broadcasters, the quality of the broadcast for the Ghana Premier League opening matchday has received widespread criticism for its subpar standard, making the potential return of StarTimes a welcome development.
