Owner of Nations FC and former Board Chairman of Asante Kotoko SC, Dr. Kwame Kyei, has delivered a scathing critique of the state of football in Ghana following violent and controversial scenes during Nations FC’s Ghana Premier League clash with Basake Holy Stars over the weekend.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, the prominent businessman and football administrator expressed deep regret over his involvement in the sport, revealing he felt betrayed by what transpired during the at the Ampain AAK II Sports Arena.
“I regret getting involved in football,” Dr. Kyei said. “What happened on Sunday was shameful, dangerous, and a complete betrayal of the principles of fair play. This is not the football I signed up for.”
Nations FC walked off the pitch in protest after two penalties were awarded to the home side, Basake Holy Stars, in what the visitors described as a blatant case of biased officiating and inadequate security.
The situation quickly escalated into violence, with Dr. Kyei and Nations FC President Divine Kyei Boadu reportedly assaulted by home supporters amid the chaos.
“We were not protected,” he lamented. “How can a club president and a board chairman be attacked in front of everyone and nothing is done? The GFA must sit up.”
He also disclosed that pre-match security assurances were not honored, saying, “We agreed there would be adequate police presence. That never happened. We were left vulnerable.”
The controversial match could have significant implications for Nations FC, who are currently in the thick of the Premier League title race. Their opponents, Basake Holy Stars, are battling relegation, making the encounter a high-stakes affair.
With the match ending in turmoil and Nations FC refusing to complete the game, the outcome of the fixture—and potentially the title race—is in limbo.
“If this is how matches will be handled in a professional league, then we are not serious as a footballing nation,” Dr. Kyei stated.
The Ghana Football Association is now under intense pressure to investigate and act decisively.
