Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has shed light on his tactical approach in Ghana’s crucial win over Mali on Monday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Speaking after the game, Addo admitted that his side had to adopt a more cautious strategy due to the high stakes for their opponents.
“They needed to win so we played a little bit more defensively,” Addo explained.
“It was important to manage the game carefully, especially knowing Mali’s urgency and the pressure they were bringing.”
The coach also addressed Ghana’s missed opportunities in front of goal, urging his players to take lessons from their wastefulness.
“I hope the players who missed chances will think the most about it and regret. It is all about learning and adapting,” he said.
Addo stressed that while the narrow win leaves Ghana still leading Group I, sharper finishing and improved decision-making will be crucial as the Black Stars edge closer to qualification for the World Cup.
Ghana, now on 19 points, have extended their lead at the top of the table with two remaining fixtures in the qualifiers.
The Black Stars need at least four points to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
