Former Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Philemon McCarthy has offered an explanation as to why ex-Asante Kotoko players appear to receive more coaching and managerial opportunities at their former club compared to ex-Hearts players.
Speaking to Ghanasportspage.com, McCarthy noted that the difference lies in professional investment, particularly in coaching education.
“The thing is former Kotoko players invest in themselves more than the ex-Hearts players. If you look at the recent coaching course the FA organized, former Kotoko players had the highest number. For Hearts of Oak, it was only Sammy Adjei that I noticed. That’s the biggest problem,” he said.
McCarthy stressed that Hearts of Oak, being one of the most demanding and structured clubs in Ghana, requires proper certification before anyone can take up a coaching role.
“You can’t coach Hearts of Oak without certificate,” he added.
Kotoko currently have their former captain Amos Frimpong serving as a member of their technical bench and former midfielder Michael Akuffu set to intern as the club.
Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak have none of their former players in their technical team with Don Boartey being the only ex-player to serve the club in the last five years as youth team coach.
