Sudan assistant coach Ignatius Osei-Fosu has lauded head coach Kwesi Appiah after a vital victory over Equatorial Guinea.

He indicated that the result is a major boost in their bid to qualify from the group.

Kwesi Appiah guided Sudan to their first AFCON victory in 13 years following a 1-0 win against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.

Speaking to GTV after the match, Ignatius credited the former Asante Kotoko manager Kwesi Appiah and improved off-field management for the team’s resurgence after opening day loss.

“I think it’s the heart of the people and the brain of Kwesi Appiah. He changed certain things, we wanted it more, and management solved outstanding issues,”

The former Medeama gaffer added that the three points were especially important following lessons learned from their opening game.

“I think we are very happy because after the first game, you can really understand what happened, and so having these three points gives us the edge to go forward,” he said.

“Knowing that three teams can qualify from the group means we might only need a point in our last game to qualify.”

He stressed the significance of the result in the context of other group fixtures, noting that Algeria’s narrow lead elsewhere made the win even more valuable.

“That makes this point very, very, very important,” he added.

Osei-Fosu also highlighted the importance of preparation and adaptability, explaining that understanding qualification scenarios helps shape tactical decisions.

“It’s part of the job. You have to know where you are coming from and where you are going. That helps you shape up your team going forward—whether you need a draw or must win by all means,” he said.

Looking ahead, the assistant coach expressed strong confidence in Sudan’s chances.

“Very, very confident. Knowing that three teams can qualify, it means at this point we might only need a point to qualify, and that’s a huge boost for us,” he concluded.

Sudan are now third in Group E tied on points with Burkina Faso, who they face in their last group game.
