Senegal captain Sadio Mané has revealed that advice from veteran coach Claude Le Roy played a crucial role in helping the team return back to the field during tense moments of their AFCON 2025 final victory over Morocco.
Speaking after Senegal’s triumph against the host nation, Mané disclosed that emotions were running high following a controversial penalty decision in the 90th minute, with several players considering leaving the pitch.
He said he sought for advice from Claude Le Roy on what to do with the former Senegal manager suggesting that the team should finish the game.
“Everyone wanted to leave. I asked Claude Le Roy for his opinion, and he told me we had to play,” Mané said.
According to the Senegal star, former Senegal forward El Hadji Diouf also echoed Le Roy’s message, urging the players to remain calm and take responsibility despite their frustrations.
Mané explained that the advice from the experienced figures helped him address the squad and refocus their mindset.
“I told the guys: whatever happens, we have to take responsibility. We’re going to play,” he added.
Senegal eventually beat Morocco 1-0 in extra time after Brahim Diaz missed the penalty at the death.
The win capped a memorable tournament for the Teranga Lions and may mark the end of Mané’s AFCON journey, as the captain hinted that the competition could be his last.
