The Member of Parliament for Ketu North Constituency, Eric Edem Agbana, has made quiet an interesting comment regarding spending by Government and office responsible for football, Ghana Football Association.
The law maker do not see the need in spending huge monies on supporters in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, when such monies can be invested in sports infrastructure and development. He believe the government focusing on developing sports infrastructure than spending public funds to send football supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be a well spent money.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, said the funds could be better invested in building sports facilities that serve communities across Ghana and promote long-term sports development, insisting using state resources to transport fans would impose an unnecessary financial burden on the country while benefiting only a small group of people.
Highlighting the costs involved, Mr. Agbana explained that transporting even a small number of supporters to the tournament could be expensive. The estimated cost per supporter for the group stage alone could reach $9,000, covering flights, match tickets, accommodation, and allowances.
“With about 2,000 supporters, the government could spend approximately $18 million,” he noted.
“If you ask me to bring even 10 people from Ketu North to the World Cup and you will spend close to $90,000, I will tell you: please use that to construct an AstroTurf or a sports complex for me in Ketu North.”
Edem opined that, he would not object to sending fans to the World Cup if the initiative is funded by private-sector partners, insisting that government resources be prioritized for long-term benefits.
His comments come on the back of numerous supporters usually send for the global showpiece with 2026 edition not different.
