A tragic incident has struck Ghana football following an armed robbery attack on players and officials of Berekum Chelsea.
The team was reportedly ambushed by armed robbers while returning from their Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex in Samreboi. The attack occurred along the Bibiani–Goaso road at Ahyiresu, where the assailants blocked the road, forcing the team bus to a halt.
According to reports, players and officials were compelled to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes to escape the attack. In the chaos, one of the club’s players, Dominic Frimpong, was shot in the head.
He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency treatment, but has sadly been confirmed dead.
The Ghana Police Service has since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. It is working to account for all team members, as initial reports indicated that some players and officials were temporarily unaccounted for following the incident.
The shocking development has sent waves across the Ghanaian football community, raising serious concerns about the safety of clubs travelling for domestic league matches.
