A football match in the Bono Region descended into chaos after referee Awal Mamudu and his assistants were allegedly assaulted by supporters during the BARFA Super Middle League grand finale at Dormaa’s Nana Agyemang Badu Park.
The shocking incident occurred on Friday, May 22, 2026, following a controversial penalty decision awarded to Bectero Sasana FC in the second half of extra time against Katakyie Stars.
According to reports, the decision sparked furious protests from Katakyie Stars players and supporters, who believed the penalty was wrongly awarded. The situation soon spiralled out of control as angry fans invaded the pitch and confronted the match officials.
Viral videos circulating on social media appear to show supporters physically attacking the referees, forcing the officials to flee for safety as the match was brought to an abrupt end.
The assault has drawn widespread condemnation, with many football stakeholders expressing concern over the safety of referees at local competitions.
In response, the Bono Ahafo Regional Football Association (BARFA) has strongly condemned the attacks and pledged to work with the Ghana Police Service to identify and prosecute all individuals involved.
