Ghana Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah has completed his move to Bundesliga side FC Koln after passing his medical and has signed a 3-year contract which runs out until July 30, 2029.
The 27-year-old left-back will wear the No. 14 jersey for the German side, with the official announcement expected shortly. Mensah joins Koln as a free agent after his contract with French Ligue 2 side AJ Auxerre expired on June 30, 2026.
The 44-cap Ghana international was one of the Black Stars’ standout performers at the 2026 World Cup, playing every minute of their campaign. His experience at the highest level and his ability to contribute both defensively and in attack made him a priority target for Koln.
Koln have been in the market for a reliable left-back since the retirement of club legend Jonas Hector. Mensah’s arrival is expected to provide stability to the backline as the club looks to build on their mid-table finish last season.
Mensah’s career has taken him through several European clubs, including Red Bull Salzburg, Zulte Waregem, Vitoria Guimaraes, Sturm Graz, Bordeaux, and Auxerre. He has also represented Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup.
He becomes Koln’s second signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrival of midfielder Eric Martel from RB Leipzig. The club is also reportedly interested in signing Australian midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler and Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez.
Mensah is expected to be officially unveiled by Koln on Saturday, with the club planning to introduce him to fans at their training facility.
