Former Ghana defender and experienced football administrator Anthony “Tony” Baffoe says he has no immediate plans to contest for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency, although he has not completely ruled out the possibility in the future.
Baffoe, speaking in an interview with 3Sports, said he had rejected the idea of pursuing the position on several occasions, explaining that leading the country’s football governing body was not something he was currently driven to do.
However, the former Black Stars player stopped short of ruling himself out permanently, suggesting his position could change over the next six to 24 months.
“I’ve said no on multiple occasions. It doesn’t drive me but I don’t know what is going to happen in six months or 12 months or 24 months. For now I don’t see myself there but you never know of tomorrow.”
His comments come ahead of the next GFA presidential election, which is scheduled for next year, as attention turns to the leadership of Ghanaian football.
The election is expected to determine who will lead the association for the next term, with current president Kurt Okraku approaching the end of his second term.
Following a decision by Congress allowing a president to seek a third term, it remains to be seen whether Okraku will enter the race again when the position becomes available.
Baffoe’s remarks clarify his current position amid speculation about whether he could emerge as a contender for the top job in Ghana football administration.
Despite distancing himself from an immediate presidential bid, Baffoe continues to play an active role in the development and administration of football in Ghana.
He is the founder and General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), an organisation that represents the interests of professional footballers in the country.
His work has also kept him involved in football matters at both local and continental levels, including engagements with Okraku on developments affecting the sport.
Baffoe’s experience as a former Black Stars defender and football administrator has maintained his presence in discussions surrounding the future of Ghanaian football.
Nevertheless, his latest comments suggest that a presidential campaign is not currently part of his plans, even as the GFA prepares for its next leadership election.
His decision to leave open the possibility of reconsidering the role means that his long-term position remains uncertain. While he has repeatedly declined the opportunity, he acknowledges that his thinking could change with time.
For now, the focus remains on the approaching election and whether Okraku will seek another term under the arrangement approved by Congress.
