Ashanti Gold Sporting Club opened their 2020/2021 premier league campaign with a draw at home against Karela United at the Obuasi Len Clay sports stadium on Sunday.
The Miners were highly optimistic of bagging their first 3 points of the season as they played hosts to the Passioners, but the visiting had other ideas. It was the visitors, Karela United that drew first blood in the first 5 minutes of the first half, when goal monger Diawisie Taylor opened the scores for the visitors.
The visitors intensified their play after registering the first goal, but the absence of fans at the stadium had less effect as Ashanti Gold fought back with a response in the 22nd minute free kick goal from Appiah McCarthy with a devastating deflection that come off an opponent.
The home side kept the momentum after pulling off the equalizer. Hans Kwoffie made it 2-1 for the Miners with a header, having taken advantage of a defensive lapse from Karela United. 2-1 it ended in the first half in favour of the Obuasi based side with high hopes of scoring another goal after the break.
Meanwhile, much determined Karela kept pressing harder till a through pass to Samuel Ofori made it possible when he pulled the trigger to level the scores at 2-2.
Ashgold enjoyed most of the possessions but coach Evans Adotey’s side reverted to a defensive play to prevent the Miners from scoring any more. The game ended 2-2 and Karela grabbed a point. Karela’s midfielder Umar Bashiru was adjudged Man of The Match (MOTM) at the end of proceedings.
