Ex Ghana coach James Kwasi Appiah has his interest in football put on ice, and while people keep wondering why, he has provided a sounding reason behind his seeming shocking decision to take time off the job he’s done for decades of his life.
The former Black Stars coach parted ways with the Ghana Football Association in December last year, following the expiration of his contract with Ghana as head coach of the senior national team. Appiah has since not returned to the touchline despite having several offers on his table from established clubs on the African continent.
Appiah disclosed in an interview recently that he is currently not interested in football issues, neither is he considering a return to the dug out any time soon. His revelation came as a surprise to many, stirring up twisting interpretations in the local media. Speaking exclusively to ghanasportspage.com, the former Asante Kotoko left back has explained reasons behind his decision, seeking to straighten up what is being reported out there.
According to him, he is currently concentrating on other businesses instead of investing all efforts into football. This he explained, is motivated by the current miserable state of some former footballers who might have concentrated solely concentrated on football which is currently not earning them anything.
“I’m not interested to talk about any football issues for now, I don’t know maybe tomorrow I will change my mind but for now I’m not interested”, Appiah told ghanasportspage.com.
Explaining his decision, Kwasi Appiah stressed that there are many past footballers who are blind now, and if they had depended solely on one job (which is football), their state of living would have been worse than people may see it to be today, and this informed him to look elsewhere.
“Most of the old players are blind now, some can’t even walked while some are really struggling for a living, so if they had concentrated only on football like that would have been their end. So do they (referring to those who have issues with his decision) want my ending to be like such people? So if I’m taken out of Black Stars won’t I do other businesses, so my concentration is on other businesses I don. My concentration is not on football for now”, he explained.
He also hinted that he believes most footballers who are struggling or do struggle to make ends meet after hanging their boots woulden’t have found themselves miserable if they had invested in other businesses during their active days in football.
“Our footballers, I’m not saying they did not do well but at the end of the day if during their playing days started other businesses with part of the money they made from playing, like buy now they wouldn’t be looking up to football earnings alone. So in everything you doing if you rely on only one job, one day you can be sacked or the job can fade, then what becomes of you? So I was talking in relation to, you don’t depend on one job, me I have never depended on one job, so if you leave one place then you look at the other side too”, he stressed.
