Asante Kotoko have appointed Portuguese national Mariano Barreto as the club’s new head coach.
The Porcupine Warriors have been without a substantive head coach since the sacking of Maxwell Konadu as head coach of the club in December, and the club has finally settled on the former Black Stars head coach.
Barreto managed the the Ghana senior national team between the years 2003 and 2004. He has coached clubs like Marítimo, Al-Nassr FC, Naval 1º de Maio, AEL Limassol, Recreativo do Libolo and Al-Qadisiyah previously.
Having vast experience in coaching after manager Ghana and the Ethiopia national football team among others, the 64-year old has as well served as assistant coach at Russian sides Dynamo Moscow and Kuban Krasnodar.
The two existing Asante Kotoko assistant coaches; Abdulai Gazale and Johnson Smith are still with the club. However, it remains unclear what their future with the club is with with the appointment of Barreto. Reports claim the Portuguese coach will have his own video analyst and assistant other than Gazale and Smith, but this remains unconfirmed.
