The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Professor Peter Twumasi looks beyond the 2019 African Games currently ongoing in Rabat, Morocco and sets the 13th edition of games to be hosted in Ghana as the main target for Ghana to win more medals.
The Director General was speaking to the nationwide sports show on Fox FM on Thursday, where he has made it categorically clear, that Ghana is not participating in all the disciplines in Rabat but the 13th edition of the African Games is the main target for the nation.
At the 3rd Specialized Technical Committee on Youth, Culture and Sports forum of the African Union Commission Masters’ session held in Algiers, Algeria in October last year, Ghana was announced winners of the bid to host the 13th edition of the African Games in 2023, after beating Egypt in the bidding process. Ghana will host the games in Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast, and the NSA boss insists the nation will participate in several games during the 13th edition with more athletes, as the country steps up the processes of building ultra modern facilities to prepare for the competitions.
“God willing this Saturday we will bring the torch to Ghana so that we also host it in 2023”, Prof. Twumasi revealed. He continued by saying, “I feel that now that we are hosting, as for this one (that ongoing in Rabat) maybe we may not got many medals, if you look at the number we brought here it’s very few, as for 2023 that’s our main target, I’m sure God will help to be able to do a lot”, he declared.
Ghana government is currently building sports infrastructure facilities across ten regions in the country aimed at nurturing talents in various sporting areas and professor Twumasi hopes that would help Ghana to produce more athletes for the 2023 African Games.
“As we endeavour to build more sports infrastructure and developing sports facilities and the human resource, as the president (Nana Addo, President of Ghana) is building ten (10) stadiums under the care of the honourable sports minister Isaac Asiamah, if all these are added it will get to a time that in Ghana when we talk of athletics, weightlifting, badminton and others we will show that we have the know how”, he visioned.
Ghana presented a total of 91 athletes to compete in only 14 distinct disciplines at the 2019 African Games in Rabat.
