Saturday saw one of the least expected results in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) after Inter Allies cruised to a 3-1 win over in-form Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park in Berekum. The scoreline came as a surprise to many pundits of the game considering the current form of Chelsea, having beaten both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at their own backyard.
Not only did Inter Allies bag the maximum three points, but also had their skipper Victorien Adebayor score twice following several dazzling skills displayed in the build up to his first goal. The Nigerian striker became the first player to hit double figures in the league after scoring brace against in the match. Adebayor has since made headlines in all major local sites including newspapers, hailing him mostly for how he managed to cunningly nutmeg experienced centre back Ahmed Adams before chipping home his first of the afternoon.
Speaking to FOX FM on Monday, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Berekum Chelsea, Nana Oduro responded to praises being sang to Adebayor, saying his nutmegging skills are nothing extraordinary to heads to break lose about. According to Nana Oduro Sarfo, Berekum Chelsea’s Ahmed Adams equally nutmegged the Nigerien but the media deliberately swept that under the carpet.
“What he did to Ahmed Adams, Ahmed Adams did same to him in the course of the game”, Oduro Sarpong told FOX FM. “Ahmed Adams nutmegged him, Sakaria Fuseini also nutmugged him but they (the media) didn’t see that”, he said.
According to Oduro Sarfo, people should not he hailing Adebayor for just nutmegging players because his nutmeg did not directly lead to the goal he scored against Chelsea as perceived.
“That (Adebayor’s nutmeg to Ahmed Adams) even didn’t bring a goal, he did that later before he scored the goal, if he had scored immediately after dribbling past Ahmed Adams then I will say he has done something extraordinary”, he argued.
Oduro Sarfo further stressed that everybody can nutmeg another player during a football match but that doesn’t win a league title.
“For nutmegging everyone does it, so if he has done some this is nothing, let him win the league title with it, after nutmegging how many points does his club (Inter Allies) has? He should continue nutmegging”, Oduro Sarfo concluded.
Victorien Adebayor is now joint top scorer of the Ghana premier league with 10 goals in 9 matches, levelled with Aduana Stars’ Yahaya Mohammed.
