Vitoria Guimaraes defender Gideon Mensah has open up on why his move to Barcelona failed.
After an impressive performances for Red Bull Salzburg in pre-season games, the Ghanaian international became subject of transfer speculation – With a report indicating a potential move to Barcelona.
The European giants wanted to sign Mensah as a backup to left-back Jordi Alba.
Mensah confirms through an interview that indeed a contact was made with his agent and the transfer process had already begun.
Parts of the deal which indicated that Mensah and his former representatives were supposed to keep the deal under a non-disclosure agreement were breached.
The left-back confirms to Citi Sports; “My former agent called me one time and was like if you get a chance to Barcelona will you go. And I said why not I will go.”
“He told me that he received a call from Barcelona informing him that they needed a backup left-back for Jordi Alba because their regular back-up has departed to Monaco.”
“If a deal went through I was going to have a first-team contract on the loan while I played in the second team, if there was the need I will step in as backup.
He spoke to me in the night and the next morning I woke up to the news all over Facebook. I called him and questioned him about how the news got out.
“We were supposed to stay underground with the move until it was concluded. The player added. Down the line, I stopped working with him.”
Gideon is currently on loan with Vitoria Guimaraes from Red Bull Salzburg.
