Manchester United suffered a 3-2 loss to AS Roma but advanced to the finals of the Europa League on aggregate.
Roma were comfortable on the ball against United’s 4-2-3-1 system with Van de Beek ineffectual on the left as Fred breaks up their progress. However, in the blink of an eye, United took the lead through Edinson Cavani after Fernandes and Fred combined well.
The hosts leveled the scores Edin Dzeko who continued with his fine run of scoring against United. Mkhitaryan got to the byline from Cristante’s pass to cross deep from the left. Pedro slammed his shot into the turf, it skipped up and was headed into the net by Dzeko, guiding it beyond De Gea from close range.
Minutes later, Roma took the lead through Bryan Cristante. Fred was caught dawdling on the ball as he tried a clever drag-back that was beaten by Pellegrini, and Bryan Cristante’s first-time hit into the far corner gave De Gea no chance.
Cavani leveled the scores for United. Bruno Fernandes had the freedom of the park to look up and picked his club to loft this pass onto the head of the onrushing striker, who timed his run to perfection to power his header past Mirante.
Roma retook the lead and it was youngster Nicola Zalewski with a long-range effort that took a deflection off Tells to beat De Gea.
Manchester United will now face Villarreal in the finals of the Europa League in Gdansk on May 26.
