Former Asante Kotoko Midfielder Francis Akwafo-Boateng ‘Totti’ has said Ghanaians learnt no lesson from the May 9th stadium disaster in 2001.
According to him what happened at the stadium that day was supposed to be a lesson to football fans but nothing was learnt.
“I’m not sure we (football fans) have learnt any lesson from what happened day at the stadium because even my team (kotoko) fans are constantly repeating same thing”, he said in an interview with ghanasportspage.com
Akwaffo who was at the stadium on the said date recalled how horrifying the scene was.
“I was part of the team who travelled to Accra but didn’t dress and I remember when we came out of the dressing room and found all those dead bodies and how people were in the pull of their blood, the scene was and it’s still horrifying. Something I never wish to experience ever again”,
“At that tender age and you had to experience such horrible scene, it was bad to watch, such a scary moment, it takes a very brave person to survive the sight of that at my age”, Akwaffo added.
The former Al Ittihad Alexandria Right back also commend Hubert Mensah for always making sure to remember that event.
“I always commend Hubert Mensah for the good works he is doing in remembrance of our departed souls and also supporting the survived ones, I have a lot of respect for him for that”,
“It is about time we take the necessary measures to make sure such incidents or similar ones becomes a thing of the past in our system”, he opines.
