Talks are far advanced between Asante Kotoko management and Hisense to reconsider the sponsorship package for opposing players who score winning goals against the Porcupines.
The Porcupines in an ‘unpopular’ contract agreement with Hisense paid any opponent that scored the winning goal against them. The club and their sponsors have so far paid GH₵35,000 Ghana Cedis for losing 7 matches of the season, enough to deny them the Premier League title.
The deal, seen as motivational enough for an opponent to score against the Fabulous club has come as shocking to many fans of the Red Army.
“We initially wanted that GH5,000 to be awarded to our player of the match But Hisense opted that any match Kotoko escape defeat, whether win or draw, they will pay the money to us if an opposing player scores a winning goal against us, that player will take away the GH5,000,” Nana Yaw Amponsah told Asempa FM.
“We were not happy with that deal because winning the 34 games will amount to GH170,000 we later agreed because we believed in our team to lose few and draw few”
“At the end of the League we got GH135,000 for escaping defeat in 27 matches whilst we lost GH35,000 for trailing 7 matches”.He added.
He reiterated that they have engaged with Hisense in a meeting to reconsider that sponsorship package, going in favour of opposing players because of the concerns raised by their supporters.
Elmina Sharks’ Tahir Mensah became the 7th player to score the winning goal against the Fabulous club, after Michael Yeboah of Olympics, Samuel Bioh of Aduana Stars, Alhaji Mustapha of Elmina Sharks, Richard Boadu of Medeama SC and Daniel Afriyie Barnie of Hearts of Oak and Stephen Owusu of Bechem United did that earlier in the season.
