Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and Bruno Fernandes hammered in a banger and Jesse Lingard placed in a beautiful hit as Manchester United saw off a fighting Newcastle United side in a 4-1 win.
Ronaldo repaid the support in the greatest possible way, from the moment he left the team coach on arrival at the venue, through the warm-up, and then once the game had started.
The 36-year-old broke the deadlock in first-half extra time when visiting goalie Freddie Woodman spilled Mason Greenwood’s effort, 12 years after he last scored for Manchester United in this stadium.
After former Liverpool defender Javier Manquillo had equalized for Newcastle with his first goal, Ronaldo completed a flowing play by racing onto Luke Shaw’s through ball and smashing a low shot through Woodman’s legs.
Bruno Fernandes then scored the game’s third goal after collecting Paul Pogba’s square ball and curling a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.
In added time, substitute Jesse Lingard scored the fourth goal.
In the other games:
Arsenal 1-0 Norwich City (Aubameyang, 66)
The Gunners, at last, score their first goal of the season!
Pepe found space on the right and curls a fantastic effort off the post. The rebound fell back to Pepe who bundled the ball towards the line and Aubameyang was there on the line to turn it home.
The Norwich players wanted an offside call, but VAR showed the deflection came off a Norwich man when Aubameyang was potentially offside.
Leicester City 0-1 Manchester City (Silva, 61)
The Cityzens got a bit of fortune, as Grealish set up Cancelo for the strike.
He cuts across the ball right-footed, slamming his effort into Soyuncu. The ball broke free and Bernardo Silva was alive to it, showing the composure to lift his effort into the net.
Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa ( Lukaku 2x, Kovavic)
Chelsea in the last game of the day thrashed Aston Villa at the Stamford Bridge.
The Blues became the only side to achieve 600 wins in the Premier League with the 3-0 victory today as returning hero Romelu Lukaku scores in each half and Mateo Kovavic chip on a mostly-comfortable evening in West London.
