Chelsea started their defense in the Champions League with a slim 1-0 victory over Zenit St. Petersburg.
Chelsea took the lead through the usual suspect, Romelu Lukaku. Azpilicueta picked it up on the right crossed for Lukaku who rose to head home past the goalkeeper. The goal ensured the Blues win the game at the Stamford Bridge.
In other games, Young Boys came from a goal down to register a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League group F opener.
United took the lead in the 13th minute, and it was him again, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his third goal in just two appearances for the Red Devils. Bruno Fernandes picked out Ronaldo who put the ball past David von Ballmoos.
Young Boys grabbed the leveller in the second half through Nicolas Ngamaleu. Elia sent in a superb cross from the right, that flashed through the six-yard box. Ngamaleu got a foot ahead of Varane to flick the ball past De Gea.
In the stoppage time, Young Boys turned it around and it was after Lingard played a back-pass blindly and straight to the path Siebatcheu, who beat De Gea and won the game for the Young Boys.
At the Camp Nou, Bayern Munich proved to be stronger than Barcelona as they thrashed the Catalans 3-0 in the first Group stage match of the Champions League.
In the 34th minute, Munich took the lead through Thomas Muller, a goal that appeared to have taken a deflection on its way in. After a nice pass outside the box, Leroy Sane passed to Muller who unleashed a shot from outside the box and his effort went in.
In the second half, Munich doubled its lead through Robert Lewandowski. Munich were on the attack, Musiala unleashed a shot that hit the post and fell kindly for Lewandowski, who tapped in the second.
Five minutes to stoppage time, Munich had their third through Lewandowski who completed his brace with his left foot.
