Chelsea beat ten-man Southampton to go at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday evening.
Chelsea opened the scoring in the 9th minute through Trevor Chalobah. Soton had survived a handball appeal against Walker-Pieters and the Blues were awarded a corner. It was delivered by Ben Chilwell, Ruben Loftus-Cheek flicked the ball to Chalobah who headed home from close range.
In the 36th minute, the Blues had the ball in the net after Antonio Rudiger worked out the ball through the middle. The Germany international nicked a pass to Lukaku who slotted the ball home but the goal was ruled out as he received the ball while in an offside position.
Just before halftime, the west London side grabbed their second through Timo Werner’s header. However, the goal didn’t count as Azpilicueta mugged Walker-Peters down in the build-up VAR canceled it.
In the 59th minute, Soton were awarded a penalty after Ben Chilwell brought down Tino Livramento inside the danger zone. James Ward-Prowse stepped up to take and made no mistake from the spot, sending Mendy in the wrong direction.
Mendy had a slack pass to Jorginho, Ward-Prowse reacted quickly and fouled the Chelsea midfielder. The referee gave Ward-Prowse a yellow card but after a VAR review, the card was changed to red.
The Blues restored their lead through Timo Werner who tapped in Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross, scoring from a close range.
A minute later, Chilwell redeemed himself as he extended Chelsea’s lead to 3-1. Mason Mount got free down the right and after Romelu Lukaku has inexplicably hit the post from close range, Azpilicueta hit the underside of the bar on the rebound, Ben Chilwell composed himself and rifled his finish beyond McCarthy, who did his best to stop it from crossing the line. Atkinson checked his watch and awards the goal.
The win sees Chelsea go at the top of the table with 16 points, two above second-placed Liverpool who face Manchester City on Sunday.
