On Saturday at the Old Trafford, Manchester United dropped points once again as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton.
Two minutes to halftime, United took the lead through Anthony Martial. The Frenchman had not looked alive before the moment he appeared on the scoresheet. Greenwood started the move, fizzing a ball into Fernandes’ feet – he controlled it brilliantly and fed Martial on the left of the box.
Martial ran onto it, shoot, and the effort got the slightest of touches off Mina and flew past Pickford.
Everton in the second half broke away and they had their leveler. There was a couple of big United errors but nonetheless, Everton had their equalizer through Townsend. Fernandes’ corner was woeful, cleared near post, and then Fred should have beaten Gray to the ball not once but TWICE. He didn’t, Gray broke on the left, gave it to Doucoure, and he picked out Townsend through on goal.
He composes himself and lashes the bottom corner past the rooted De Gea.
At the Stamford Bridge, Chelsea beat ten-man Southampton to go at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday evening.
Chelsea opened the scoring in the 9th minute through Trevor Chalobah. Soton had survived a handball appeal against Walker-Pieters and the Blues were awarded a corner. It was delivered by Ben Chilwell, Ruben Loftus-Cheek flicked the ball to Chalobah who headed home from close range.
In the 59th minute, Soton were awarded a penalty after Ben Chilwell brought down Tino Livramento inside the danger zone. James Ward-Prowse stepped up to take and made no mistake from the spot, sending Mendy in the wrong direction.
The Blues restored their lead through Timo Werner who tapped in Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross, scoring from a close range.
A minute later, Chilwell redeemed himself as he extended Chelsea’s lead to 3-1. Mason Mount got free down the right and after Romelu Lukaku has inexplicably hit the post from close range, Azpilicueta hit the underside of the bar on the rebound, Ben Chilwell composed himself and rifled his finish beyond McCarthy, who did his best to stop it from crossing the line. Atkinson checked his watch and awards the goal.
The win saw Chelsea go at the top of the table with 16 points, a point above second-placed Liverpool.
Arsenal also secured a hard-fought point at the American Express Community Stadium following a 0-0 draw with Brighton.
Tottenham halted a three-match losing streak with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday evening.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg gave Spurs the lead just before the half-hour mark, before an Ollie Watkins goal pulled the Villans level.
A Matt Targett’s own goal then saw Spurs take the lead in the 71st minute, and it proved decisive as Nuno Espirito’s side picked maximum points.
Still in London, West Ham’s indifferent season continued after they lost 2-1 at home to Brentford.
The Hammers, who had won once in their last four matches, fell behind after just 20 minutes courtesy of a Bryan Mbeumo goal.
For long periods it seemed it could be enough to give the Bees a win until Jarrod Bowen equalised in the 80th minute.
Yoane Wissa then scored a stoppage-time winner to give Btenford maximum points.
In another match, Leicester lost a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away to Crystal Palace.
Kelechi Iheanacho celebrated his birthday with Leicester’s opener on the half-hour mark, before Jamie Vardy doubled their lead five minutes later.
The hosts then turned it around in a 10-minute second-half period, with Michael Olise pulling one back on the hour-mark.
Jeffrey Schlupp then ensured the Eagles got a point in the 71st minute to give them a second successive draw.
In the last match of the week, Manchester City twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw away to Liverpool on Sunday evening.
Sadio Mane gave Liverpool the lead in the second half before Phil Foden pulled one back for Man City in the 69th minute.
Mohamed Salah then restored the Reds’ lead in the 76th minute, only for Kevin de Bruyne to once again drag the defending champions back into the game.
