It has become more like a healthy competition among Ghanaian players both home and abroad over which Ghanaian football club they would want to play for before hanging their boots. Some Ghana Premier League players who neither play for Hearts of Oak nor Asante Kotoko have boldly come out to state which club or where their preferred destination. For the foreign-based players, most of them have shown interest in playing for Ghana’s two biggest clubs, Asante Kotoko or Accra Hearts of Oak.
However, Asante Kotoko lead the pack with most foreign-based players itching to don the Porcupine Warriors jersey before they call time on their career. Hearts of Oak are also slightly in the picture as far as players wanting to play for local clubs is concerned. We shall however talk about a player of Liberty Professionals, Paul Kwame who is not in a rush to leave the relegated club and has also stated the club he would wish to play for locally if the need arises.
Paul Kwame says he will not leave Liberty Professionals simply because they have been relegated and will play in the Division One League next season but he might leave if an opportunity or a lucrative deal comes up. The central defender is eying a deal outside but has also revealed the local club he would want to play for if the chance comes up.“I won’t say I’m ready to leave Liberty because of we being in Division One, you know as football anything can happen and if there is an offer that is around obviously it’s a football business and also a career you’ve chosen so in life when there is a chance and opportunity for you, you have to take it so if it’s a good offer why not. I will just take that chance and go and play but I will not base solely like Liberty is in Division One so I’m leaving just like that. I will just continue and also if a chance comes why not.” He told Adamu Muftawu.
Paul Kwame has not hid his favorite club if the opportunity arises. Several players have made public the local club they would want to join if the opportunity comes up in future. Even players who ply their trade outside Ghana often make public the local club they would want to retire at. One of them is Agyemang Badu who has declared his intentions to play for Asante Kotoko before hanging his boots. Norway based midfielder, Isaac Twum has also declared his intention of playing for Accra Hearts of Oak. Ex-Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan wanted to play for Asante Kotoko but eventually ended up playing briefly for Ghana Premier League club, Legon Cities FC.
It is not likely Gyan will continue with the side as he might not be in the plans of head coach, Maxwell Konadu. Paul Kwame has made his intentions clear of playing for 2020/21 Ghana Premier League Champions, Accra Hearts of Oak. “Football anything can happen but I will love to join Hearts of Oak, obviously Hearts of Oak is a big club. We have Asante Kotoko there but the club I will like to join is Hearts of Oak.” Paul Kwame told Adamu Muftawu.
Accra Hearts of Oak are in the 2021/22 CAF Champions League where they made a bold start to the campaign. They defeated Guinea side, Club Industriel de Kamsar 2-0 in a one legged qualifier due to the Coup D’Etat in Guinea at the Accra Sports Stadium. They have thus qualified for the next preliminary round of the CAF Champions League and would face Morocco outfit, Wydad Athletic Club. The first leg comes up at the Accra Sports Stadium with the second in Morocco in a week.
