A Brazilian footballer has been arrested by police for assaulting a match official with a kick in the head.
Sao Paulo de Rio Grande footballer William Ribeiro has been charged with attempted murder after attacking the referee while he was on the ground.
The official had failed to give Sao Paulo a free-kick before he was kicked in the head. He was later released from the hospital Tuesday morning.
“The match was suspended and Crivellaro was taken to a local hospital after being knocked unconscious. Ribeiro was arrested at the stadium and charged with attempted murder,” Sky Sports reported.
“His attack was very strong and violent, kicking the referee in the head and making him pass out. The referee had no chance of defending himself,” the police said.
Meanwhile, Brazil will take on Venezuela in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
