The battle of qualification from Group C to the last 16 of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon between Ghana and Comoros tonight is set to go down to the wire, as Ghana seeks to avoid setting unwanted record in the competition history, whiles Comoros strive to make a big statement against Ghana.
The Coelacanths are on the search for their first ever goal at the AFCON tournament, as well as first win or better still, first ever point in their history of the competition, and they seek to achieve either or all of these against the Black Stars who are playing in the Africa Cup of Nations for the 23rd time of appearances. Comoros lost their initial two games against Gabon (1-0) and Morocco (2-0) in Group C, and are on the verge of exiting the tournament with unwanted history of no goal, no point and no win should they fail to score against Ghana, pick a draw or ultimately, cause great upset by beating the four times champions.
While officials of the Comoros national team and the FA are confident they have learnt lessons from their first two games, beating Ghana will not come on silver platter. The Black Stars have for themselves a favourable history backing them in the group stages of the AFCON, and that mystery means that Comoros will certainly fall in the hands of Ghana as the two sides face off tonight, ceteris paribus.
Since making a debut in the AFCON in 1963, Ghana have never exited the tournament without winning a single match at the group stage of the competition. In their last 22 appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana have always won at least one game at the group stages, either the first, second, or last match of the group stage, they do win.
In the 2021 edition currently ongoing, Ghana have played two matches already, they have drawn one and lost one. This certainly means, that if history is anything to go by, then Comoros are fortunately for Ghana and unfortunately for them, going to be the VICTIMS of Ghana’s lone victory in their 58-year experience at the Cup of Nations. Time will however tell, whether Ghana will maintain the history or Comoros will stand in their way.
