The Government of Ghana through its sports Ministry has expressed deep disappointment in the woeful performance of the Black Stars at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, having exited the tournament after group stage matches without a single win.
The Black Stars were dumped out of the tournament in Cameroon following a disappointing 3-2 defeat to debutants Comoros on Tuesday night.
Ghana failed to advance to the last 16 place for the fifth time in the nation’s 23 times appearance at the AFCON, failing to win a single game, making their 2021 campaign their worst ever.
Following the shocking exit, the Government, through the sector Ministry has expressed disappointment in the team, and has summoned the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for engagements.
In a letter dated Wednesday, 19 January, 2021, signed by Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, the hierarchy of the GFA has been called for explanations.
“The entire country is extremely disappointed by the abysmal performance and early exit of the Black Stars from the ongoing 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports shares in the country’s sentiment”, the statement expressed.
In the statement, the Ministry also expressed worry over the fact that the Government provided everything the team needs to succeed ahead of the tournament, but the team failed to give a good accounts for the resources spent.
The Sports Ministry now demands answers from the FA and people associated with the Black Stars.
“The Ministry has summoned the Ghana Football Association (G.F.A) leadership to an emergency meeting scheduled for Friday, 21st January, 2022 to urgently discuss and take decisions aimed at salvaging the performance of the Black Stars especially in the next set of games”, the Ministry announced.
The Black Stars are expected to return home on Thursday, 20th January, 2022.
