Title hopefuls and league leaders Asante Kotoko are aiming for a commanding victory over resurgent Accra Lions to climax the first round of the league when the two sides face off this afternoon at the Baba Yara sports stadium for the Ghana Premier League (GPL) match week 17 tie.
Asante Kotoko will look forward to redeeming themselves by returning to winning ways following their shocking away 2-1 loss to bottom placed Elmina Sharks at Elmina last Monday. The Porcupine Warriors are leading the league log with 33 points from 15 matches and currently are 3 points above second placed Bechem United who have played a two games more, and 14 points ahead their opponents for today’s game Accra Lions who are 14th in the League table with 19 points.
The premier league debutants have not won more than one match away from home this season, and appear to have a mountain to climb against record winners of the league this afternoon. Accra Lions have not really been convincing recently, amassing only 19 points after 16 Premier League games out of a possible 45 and sit 14th in the League log, not far above the drop zone.
Before the loss against Elmina Sharks, Asante Kotoko had gone 8 matches without tasting defeat, and the loss at Sharks is their only second defeat so far in the first round of the campaign. Their opponents Accra Lions on the other hand, have managed to win 5, lost 7 and drawn 4 of their matches and lie at the bottom half of the League table. The Lions are just a point above Legon Cities and 8 points ahead of Elmina Sharks who languish at the bottom with 11 points from 16 matches, hoping to survive the season.
Asante Kotoko will look forward to extend their lead on the league table by winning over visiting Accra Lions to open 6 points lead on the table. The match has been schedule to kick off this Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm at the Baba Yara sports stadium.
The match which will kick off at 3pm at the Baba Yara Sports stadium will be shown live on StarTimes Adepa Channel 247.
