London based English Premier League side Chelsea have issued a club statement in solidarity with Ukraine following Russsia’s invasion of the country which has led to to continuous Russia’s military attack on Ukraine that has claimed scores of lives already.
The statement comes in less than 24-hours after the club’s Russian owner Roman Abramovic announced decision to cede the ‘stewardship and care’ of the club, a decision which comes for obvious reasons.
Chelsea in a laconic statement on Sunday said, “The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating. Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace”, the statement said.
Abramovic, Chelsea’s owner is alleged in some sections of the English press as being close to Russia’s Psident Vladimir Putin. The Blues owner has not, as influential citizen of Russia, critised or condemned Russia’s acts in public, and has been criticised for his reticence. Interestingly, the statement by Chelsea made no mention of the name ‘Russia’ or the Russian invasion.
