Breaking News: Augustine Eguavoen steps down as Nigeria Technical Adviser after losing World Cup slot to Ghana

Interim Technical Adviser of the senior national men’s football team of Nigeria, the Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen has resigned from his position barely 48 hours after losing Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup slot to Ghana, ghanasportspage.com can confirm.

Eguavoen, who guided Nigeria to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16, was assigned the team to and tasked to qualify the country to the World Cup in Qatar which starts in November this year, but has failed to deliver and has decided to step down as the interim Technical Adviser of the team.

Niger were paired with Ghana for the last round of the World Cup qualifiers in the month of March, with Ghana having to play the first leg as hosts before traveling to Nigeria for the final game. The Black Stars, led by former Ghana international Otto Addo, were held to a goalless draw at the Kumasi Baba Yara sports stadium by the Super Eagles on March 25, but the Stars went to Abuja to secure qualification to the mundial after holding the pre-match favourites Nigeria to a 1-1 scoring draw.

Ghana then qualified to the World Cup ahead of Nigeria on away goal rule, a defeat which Nigeria have not been able to believe.

Having failed to deliver, Mr Eguavoen, who won the 1994 AFCON with Super Eagles as captain, has resigned from his position.

Media Officer for the Super Eagles and the NFF, Raji Femi confirmed the resignation of Eguavoen in a brief interview with ghanasportspage.com.

“Yes, he has stepped down”, Femi confirmed.

Emmanuel Amuneke remains the Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, and he is expected to continue his mandate as the substantive head coach of the Super Eagles.
