Ghanaian female midfielder, Sonia Opoku has shared her experience after joining Turkish club Trabzonspor from Ampem Darkoa Ladies in Ghana.
The Black Queens midfielder ended her 8-year stint with the Ghana Women’s Premier League side Ampem to embark on her first European move to join the Turkish Women’s Super Lig side, Trabzonspor last month.
Sharing her experience since joining the Turkish side via Original Tv’s Sports Punch show with Nana Yaw Opoku Agorohene, the 21-year old midfielder explained how difficult it is to communicate with the team in terms of English speaking. Regardless of the difficulties, Sonia is able to make waves on the field.
“So far things are normal. Is not easy because they don’t understand English. They don’t understand it at all. Is not easy but one of our coaches is able to speak so he makes it easy for me in terms of communications. They don’t even understand ‘pass the ball’ but the system has been changed. The coach who is able to speak both languages has informed them to pass me the ball base on how I position my self on the field of play. So without me calling for a pass they sometimes give the ball.
“My relationship with the coach is very good.
“It was difficult for me when the decision came to leave Ampem Darkoa after eight years but I also believed that I’ve been with the club eight years. I have served very well so it is time for me to take a new challenges that is why I had to leave.” She ended.
Sonia won the Ghana Women’s Premier League title with Ampem Darkoa Ladies in 2015-16, and 2017 together with the Super Cup in 2017.
She was honored as the best Ghana FA Cup player after the 2021 season.
