A brace from winger Emmanuel Gyamfi and one from Augustine Okrah were enough to send Asante to the top of the league table after beating Legon Cities FC by 3-1 in match day two of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) at the Accra sports stadium on Friday evening.
The Porcupine Warriors came from a goal down to hand Legon Cities FC their first defeat in the 2019-2020 league season by beating the rebranded side 3-1 to make it two wins in two matches in the league after match day two.
Legon Cities started the game on a brighter note with attacking mentality, sharing the spoils with Kotoko in terms of possession. Their efforts paid off when, in the 10th minute of the first half, star striker Payanotis Papadopoulos completed a beautiful build up by the home side by grabbing the opener for his side, which left many Kotoko supporters anxious about a posibility of getting the equalizer before half time.
Augustine Okrah got the equalizer for Kotoko on the 35th minute with a fantastic finish to end the first half with the scores at 1-1.
Coach Maxwell Konadu’s side then came into the game stronger to pile more pressure on the opponents defence as they knock at the goal. The idea paid on on the 51st minute when Kotoko’s Gyamfi pounced on Emmanuel Suleiman’s back pass to the Cities goalkeeper, calmly positioned himself and placed the ball at the into the left bottom corner to make it 2-1 for the visitors.
Kotoko kept the pressure in search for more goals, and Sogne Yacouba picked the ball, went pass two defenders of Legon Cities FC before sending in a cross into the goal area which would be headed in by Gyamfi who got his second of the evening, making it 3-1 for the visitors.
The second half was hugely dominated by Asante Kotoko as Legon Cities FC simply couldn’t match the quality of play exhibited by the Kum Apem lads. 3-1 it ended for Kotoko and the 24 times league champions now lead the league table after matching day two pending Saturday and Sunday results of the other clubs to complete week two fixtures.
