Victory was sweet for Ghana after beating Chile to finish third at the Kirin Cup.

The Chile national team lost 3-1 on penalty shootout to Ghana in the third and fourth place at the Panasonic Stadium in Japan.

It was second time Ghana played against the South American side in a friendly since 2012.

On both occasions the games ended in a stalemate, but Tuesday’s battle needed penalties to settle the score as Ghana prevailed to finish third with a 3-1 scoreline.

Ghana finished the game with nine men but Abdul Manaf Nurudeen made the headlines as he made two saves to grab victory for Ghana.

Coach Otto Addo would pick valuable lessons from the tournament as his team demonstrated massive improvement against Chile compared to their output against Japan on Friday.

Manaf Nurudeen, Baba Abdul Rahman, Benjamin Tetteh, Felix Afena Gyan, and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku stared for Ghana as the technical ringed five changes to the starting lineup.

After the 4-1 loss to Japan, the technical team asked the players to improve, and they did so on Tuesday, with the Black Stars putting up a valiant structure and performance against the South Americans.

According to assistant coach Didi Dramani, the team needed a certain mindset and different approach to dominate against the Chile national team after going down in the opener against the host Japan.

“We needed a certain mindset and a certain approach to be able to get the chance to dominate and keep a structure that will give you the chance to deny the opponent from creating chances against you.

“You need to be in a certain structure, you need to be able to stay in a certain discipline so that you can deny the opponent,” Didi revealed in an interview with Ghanasportspage.com after the game.

Ghana’s next assignment is in September – a back to back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola before the World Cup in November.
