Ashanti Gold Sporting Club have returned to winning ways in the ongoing Ghana Premier League (GPL) by beating struggling Aduana Stars 4-0 during their match week 15 encounter at the Obuasi Len Clay stadium on Friday.
Before the match on Friday, both sides had seen their performance in the GPL on the decending curve, but it was the Miners who came to the party to overpower coach Paa Kwasi Fabin’s traveling ‘Ogya’ boys.
Ashgold had gone 4 matches in the league without a single win, recording 2 draws and 2 defeats. However, they managed to turn things around against the two times league champions in what was an obvious pulsating display on Friday afternoon.
The first half started with early incursions from the home side, resulting in a 5th minute free kick for the Miners which was well delivered by right back Kwadwo Asamoah, but experienced goalkeeper Joseph Addo saved the situation for the visitors to keep the game still in control. Aduana Stars reacted positively with a little dominance in the midfield, pushing forward for a goal but Yahaya Mohammed’s efforts upfront always met a resolute back line of the home side.
Stephen Bentil came close to to breaking the virginity of the game in the 15th minute as he comes one on one with goalkeeper Joseph Addo, but his effort went straight into the arms of the goalkeeper. Ashanti Gold kept the pressure on and that won them a penalty in the 24th minute which was flawlessly buried home by Frank Akoto to make it 1-0 for the 4 times league champions.
Ashgold in-form winger Yaw Annor made it 2-0 after 5 minutes and that was enough to push the game into half time when they referee blew for recess.
After the half time, Aduana Stars came into strongly looking for at least a consolation goal and to press harder for the equaliser, but their efforts fell flat as the Miners proved more resolute and strong to handle. David Abadna scored twice in the second half to put the game beyond control for Aduana Stars. 2-0 it ended in favour of the home side at the Len Clay stadium to push them from 10th to 6th on the league table with 21 points.
