During the blockbuster Accra derby between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics at the Accra sports stadium last Sunday, the technical team of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), led by Ghana coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor were seen at the stadium to catch a glimpse of the flavour of the local game.
Technical Director of the GFA, Bernhard Lippert also sat by the Black Stars coach Akonnor as both technical brains watched the display of the local players probably to be informed of which player may be considerably fit for a call up into the senior national team.
Star players such as Gladson Awako of Great Olympics, Patrick Razak and Victor Aidoo of Hearts of Oak among others were the names to watch out for. However, it was Olympic’s Gladson Awako whose efforts caught the eye of the Black Stars boss.
Awako, a former star for T.P Mezembe, opened the score with a breathtaking free kick to set the pace for coach Yaw Preko’s side.
Since the start of the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League season, Gladson Awako has proved himself as a magnificent player, and has so far scored a total of 4 goals in the league, won 4 match of the match awards. Awako also scooped the award for player of the month of December, and his performance in the derby on Saturday against Accra Hearts of Oak may have left coach CK Akonnor considering him for a call up into the Black Stars.
Olympics won the game by 2-0 over their city rivals after Maxwell Abbey connected home a cross from his brother Samuel Ashie Quaye to seal victory for the Dade Boys.
Ghana’s next international assignment has been slated for March this year, and with coach CK Akonnor watching more of the league matches, local players who will impress him may be considered for call ups
