The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has summoned Ghanaian boxer Patrick Allotey to appear before it in respect to a video that has gone viral, showing the boxer seemingly assaulting a football fan who has been identified as Michael Siaw Agyemang during a league match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko last Sunday.
In his narratives on FOX 97.9 FM, Allotey implied he was provoked by the fan (Siaw) who persistently blocked his view, standing directly in from of him and waving a flag of Asante Kotoko, refusing to leave the place despite several appeals to him. Further attempt to get Siaw out of his view resulted in lost of temper between the two, forcing him to throw few punches which eventually left poor Siaw with a deep cup above the left eye, bleeding beyond control.
Speaking to FOX FM on Tuesday, Patrick Allotey rendered an unconditional apology to the victim, calling on everyone to join him apologize to Siaw having deeply regretted his actions.
The GBA strongly condemned the incident and have threatened to sanction Allotey in a way which could even include revocation of his boxing licence.
The nation’s boxing governing body has summoned the WBO Africa Welterweight Champion to appear before it to explain his actions, and give reasons why his licence should not be revoked due to what he has done.
“Yesterday (Tuesday, January 28, 2020) the Ghana Boxing Authority, we issued a summons to Patrick Allotey, the WBO African Super Welterweight Champion to come and answer why his licence should not be revoked or he should not be banned and why he brought the name of the sport in disrepute”, Sammy Heywood Okine, GBA spokesperson confirmed in an interview with FOX FM.
Mr. Heywood believes that despite the numerous apologies from Patrick Allotey, the due process must be followed and the GBA must act in the spirit of the law. As a result, Allotey has until Wednesday, 7th February, 2020 to appear before the body to explain his actions and why he should be allowed to continue his career as a boxer.
“He has apologized although but the due process must be followed and we must do the needful”, Okine continued. We have given him Wednesday 7th February to come and answer why his licence should not be revoked or he should not be banned, that’s how the law is, we have to go to court and see why and how then we get the real answers then we come out. We cannot just come with a decision that we’ve banned him or something, we need to see what happened then we take it from there”, Okine concluded.
