Stranded Ghanaian footballers in Ethiopia return home, moved to isolation centre

Ghanaian World Cup star Lee Addy and 18 other Ghanaian footballers who were stranded in Ethiopia following the closure of Ghana’s borders in March as a preventive measure against the importation of the novel coronavirus have been flown home by the government.

The 19 players, togother with 11 other Ghanaians were airlifted home on Friday. The contingent of 30 Ghanaians arrived in the country on Friday, July 17, 2020 at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), and have all been housed at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, Prampram – Accra for a 14-day mandatory quarantine for tests against potential covid-19 cases.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ghanasportspage.com, Black Stars defender Lee Addy confirmed the team has arrived home have been moved to the isolation centre for the mandatory covid-19 quarantine protocol.

“It is true we have arrived (in Ghana) and we are in Prampram right now and everything is okay. We were received very well and everything is going on according to plan”, Lee Addy confirmed.

The 30-persons contingent made a transit in Togo before continuing the journey to Ghana after series of successful communications among the Government of Ghana (GoG), the Togo Football Association, the Ministry of Youth and Sports to bring the players home.

Among the names of footballers who arrived in the country on Friday include Lee Addy, former Hearts of Oak player Kwaku Andoh, the twin brothers Alhassan Nuhu and Fuseini Nuhu, Adongo Richmond, former Medeama SC and Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Muntari Tago, Latif Salifu, Osumanu Rahim among others.

News of the players among other Ghanainains stranded in Ethiopia shown in a viral video broke in latter stages of June, and the government and the FA have responded positively to bring home these citizens.

For the purposes of covid-19 protocols, the 30 persons will be based at the Ghanaman Soccer Science of Excellence – Prampram for the next 14 days for isolation, during which government will cater for their upkeep. Within this 14 days mandatory self isolation period, they will go through routine daily temperature checks, pulse checking by designated health practitioners who will monitor their situation, and carry out the necessary covid-19 tests on them. If proven negative after the required mandatory period, they will be allowed out to continue their normal life activities.
