Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Jordan Opoku has rated himself the best offensive midfielder to have played in Ghana football for the past 15 years since he graduated from the then Feyenoord Academy (now WAFA), through to Asante Kotoko and Berekum Chelsea where he plays currently.
According to the Berekum Chelsea midfielder, he has, on few occasions, met midfielders who play better than him but that was not and has never been in Ghana. Jordan Opoku, after graduating from the Winneba Secondary School team, continued his youth career at Tema Hurricanes before moving to the rechristened Gomoa Fette Feyenoord Academy in the year 2002.
In 2005, Asante Kotoko, led by then board member Jerry Asare (of blessed memory) approached Jordan whiles playing for Feyenoord and sealed a deal which say him moved to the Baba Yara stadium side to compete in the midfield the legendary Stephen Oduro and others at the Asante Kotoko midfield.
In the past 15 years (2005-2020), Jordan has played for Asante Kotoko in three different spells, Berekum Chelsea for the 2012-2013 season where he won the premier league with the Porcupine Warriors. He has between this time frame also played in Albania, Iraq and Thailand.
In an exclusive interview with Television CK, Jordan has emphasised on his natural talent in the game of football, describing himself as the best offensive midfielder (in his position as No. 8) Ghana has ever seen in the era of his playing career. According to him, he has encountered few players playing at his position who are better than him, but that happened abroad and not in Ghana.
Jordan made this known when the host, Jeffries Sintim Koree asked him whether he has ever met a player (midfielder) who plays better than him in Ghana.
“Met a player who plays better than me? He knows how to play but the “more than me” is what will be an issue”, Jordan told Television CK. Jeffries Sintim Koree reiterated the question and Jordan maintains, whiles admitting encountering a player who plays better than him, that is not in Ghana.
“Oh I’ve met someone who plays better than me, I’ve met someone who plays better than me……..oh not at all, I’m not talking about in Ghana here, for outside (abroad), yes”, he insisted. Asked whether someone plays better at the number 8 position than he does, Jordan refused to accept that. “My position where I play, for that I’m not sure (there is somebody who plays there better here in Ghana than me)”, he insisted.
The 32-year old midfielder also described himself as a magician on the field of play, and explained that as having the ability to do everything he wishes to do with the ball.
“For I can do whatever I want with the ball. Yes, I can do whatever I want with the ball”, Jordan concluded.
