After six years of fantastic career with FC Barcelona, Luis Suárez has signed for Madrid side Athletico Madrid on a free transfer, with six million euros to be paid in variables, the club has announced.
The 33-year old striker reached an agreement with the Catalan club to rescind the final year of his contract, permitting him to pen a two-year deal with the Los Rojiblancos.
The former Liverpool striker will earn nine million euros after tax per year at Atletico, where he is set for a new challenge under Diego Simeone.
Suárez’ move to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano comes following Italian giants Juventus opted for Alvaro Morata ahead of the Uruguan. The exit of Morata from Athletico made it easier for Suárez to complete his move to Athletico as a direct replacement.
Suárez leaves the club as the club’s third all time highest scorer, where he scored 198 goals in 283 appearances over six years.
He joined the Catalan club in 2014 after the World Cup finals in Brazil, and has since won for himself four LaLiga Santander titles, one Champions League, four Copa del Rey titles, one UEFA Super Cup, two Supercopa de Espana titles and one Club World Cup, as well as a Pichichi Trophy.
