The story remained unchanged at the Berekum Golden City Park during the Ghana Premier League (GPL) match day two encounter between hosts Berekum Chelsea and Asante Kotoko as the Porcupines’ hope of breaking their winless jinx at the Bibires’ home fell on rocks.
Asante Kotoko, as we told you in our preview of the match, have never won match against Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Partk for ten years now and Chelsea maintained their home invisibility against the Kumasi based side. Asante Kotoko started on a brighter note when star striker Kwame Opoku converted a carpet cross sent in from Emmanuel Gyamfi to put his side in the lead just 18 minutes into the first half.
Berekum Chelsea came close to equalizing on the 40th minute but Felix Annan dived and stretched almost beyond all doubts to stop Chelsea’s Kissi Boateng from finding the net. The visitors held on to the pressure to go for recess for a 1-0 lead.
The home side came into the second department of the game with high intensity. Coach Michael Hesse Odameten refreshed his side by introducing Jordan Opoku, Atta Agyei and Emmanuel Clottey. This brought the game under the control of Berekum Chelsea and their surge forced Asante Kotoko defender Abdul Ganiu Ismail to concede a dangerous free kick at the edge of the box when he brought down Chelsea skipper Stephen Amankona.
Emmanuel Clottey rose to the occasion to lease a ferocious striker straight into substituted goalkeeper Kwame Baah’s net to bring the game to a 1-1 end.
History repeated itself that Asante Kotoko have never beaten Cheleas at the Golden City Park. It’s worthy to note, that the two victories Kotoko have recorded over Chelea at Chelsea’s home ground were at the Sunyani Coronation Park.
The 1-1 draw at Berekum means Asante Kotoko have picked 2 points from their first two matches into the 2020/2021 GPL after drawing their first game 1-1 at home with Eleven Wonders.
