Liverpool started their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 come-from-behind win against AC Milan in an entertaining clash played at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Jordan Henderson were on target for Jurgen Klopp’s side, while Ante Rebic and Theo Hernandez scored for the visitors.
Liverpool were the first off the blocks and got the first chance after just three minutes when Robertson burst clear on the overlap and centred a great ball which Origi took in his stride, but his first-time effort drifted wide of the far post.
They created a second chance two minutes later but failed to convert this time with Diogo Jota the culprit as the Milan defense managed to clear the danger.
It didn’t take long though for the hosts to find the back of the net, which came in the ninth minute.
Alexander-Arnold played a one-two with Mohamed Salah before driving away from Leao into the six-yard box and lashed an effort, which took a deflection, towards goal and it crept past a helpless Maignan for a 1-0 lead.
Liverpool were then handed a chance to make it two when Roberton’s goal-bound shot was deflected behind off the outstretched arm of Bennacer.
Salah then stepped up to take the penalty, but his effort through the middle was expertly saved by the goalkeeper.
The Egyptian then came within a fingertip of atoning for his penalty miss on the half-hour mark when he unleashed a fierce drive towards the top corner of the Milan goal but it was tipped brilliantly over by Maignan.
Liverpool were then punished for their failure to find a second as AC Milan found a way back into the game with a superb leveler in the 42nd minute.
Saelemaekers drifted into the final third, offloaded the ball to Leao who split Matip and Gomez with an excellent pass to Rebic, who wrapped a clinical first-time finish past Alisson.
They then turned the game on its head two minutes later as they carved through the Liverpool defence with another sweeping attack which was coolly finished by Theo Hernandez.
Liverpool however restored parity four minutes into the second half thanks to Salah, before Jordan Henderson wrapped up the win.
In another match, Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 6-3 in an entertaining clash at the Etihad Stadium.
Nathan Ake and Riyad Mahrez’s goals, coupled with an own goal gave City a 3-1 at the break before marching clear in the second half thanks to goals from Jack Grealish, Joao Cancelo, and Gabriel Jesus.
