Former Ghanaian midfielder Ibrahim Sunday has revealed the type of players who can play in the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations qualifications especially in the African terrain.
Most of the African players who play their club football in Europe are always likely to be invited into their national teams.
Mr. Ibrahim Sunday is the first-ever African footballer to appear in the Bundesliga to play for Werder Bremen.
In a statement, the former Asante Kotoko winger revealed the types of players who are suitable for the World Cup and AFCON qualifiers per their standards.
“In my opinion, the World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON qualifiers should be played with matured players. They have confidennce whenever they are playing but if you invite second division players and bench players from Europe to come and play the qualifiers then to me is not good. If the person is not first class and regular player in Europe then the person shouldn’t be invited. They should call those who are regular at their club level in Europe.
“That Stephen Appiah and Muntari’s squad were regular in Europe so they know the temperament of the high class football and they will never shake in a game.
“We should take care in the selection of players for our national team to play in the World Cup qualifiers and the African Cup. Though we are not having kind of squad today but we still have some Ghanaian players who were born there and still performing.
As a matter of fact OUR current squad is not like that previous squad so we should use the ‘Plan B’. If the local players are those who can help then we should have started grooming them and have a long term plan for that but not now the tournament is approaching. We should have planned for a long term so that we can be successful later on.
“It is fifty-fifty if we want to qualify for the world Cup but we can qualify if there is luck on our side. It is very hard at the moment” he told GL Radio in China.
