Madison Square Garden, New York City – In a lightweight battle between former world champions, Vasiliy Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) dropped and outboxed Richard Commey (30-4, 27 KOs) to secure a dominant twelve round unanimous decision win.
The scores were 117-110, 119-108, 119-108.
A very tactical star with both fighters figuring each other out. Commey began to let his hands go during the first round had some success as Lomachenko was still figuring out the range. In the second, both had moments with solid punches as the action was heating up. Lomachenko closed the round strong with two big shots to push Commey back.
In the sixth, they were trading punches against the ropes. Lomachenko continued to outland Commey with the faster punches. During the seventh, Lomachenko landed a series of punches and big hook that sent Commey down on his back. Commey got up and was doing his best to survive as Lomachenko went for the finish. Lomachenko was landing a lot of shot with Commey out on his feet, but Commey kept throwing back and survived.
Lomachenko continued to dominate during the eight, but Commey was able to recover from the previous round’s disaster. At the start of the ninth, Commey let his hands go and was looking to change the tide. Lomachenko was taking his time and looking for openings and picking his shots carefully. The tenth was a lot closer as Commey tried to rally again, but was still being outlanded and outboxed.
In the eleventh, Lomachenko was landing with accurate punches from different angles. During the twelfth and final round, they were trading hard shots. Lomachenko was more accurate and seemed to shake Commey up at one point.
