Football pundits and fans of the Ghana senior National team, the Black Stars were thrown into a state of wonder following the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announcement on Wednesday of a reconstituted technical team of the Black Stars with a combination of Ghanaian decent Christopher William Gerard Hughton and former Ghana international, Otto Addo.
“Former Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has been appointed as Technical Advisor to the newly constituted Black Stars Technical team led by Otto Addo”, the GFA announced on Wednesday.
The announcement led to a breed of several questions in the sports fraternity as to whether Otto Addo, who has been working as Assistant coach of Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, has now taken the Black Stars coaching job on permanent basis. The GFA has now clarified that his appointment is only on temporary basis subject to changes after March 27.
“Initially the discussion was very tough because Borussia Dortmund did not want to release Otto Addo as it happened during the Africa Cup of Nations, but to some extent we were able to find a way”, Henry Asante, Communications Director of the GFA told TV3’s newday on Thursday.
Henry confirmed that Otto Addo accepted the Black Stars job on condition that it is on temporary basis.
“Once the club gave their blessing for his release, the three-man team [Kurt Okraku (FA boss), the Technical Director, Bernhard Lippert and Anthony Baffoe] also spoke to Otto Addo and discussed into detail what they want him to come and do and the vision going forward, but it will on a short term capacity, which of course, he agreed”, Henry explained.
Addo, Hughton, Didi Dramani and George Boateng have been appointed on the interim just take charge of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers of the Black Stars against Nigeria on March 24 and 27 for the first and second legs respectively. What happens afterwards? Well, your guess is as good as ours.
