Scores of Ghanaian football fans have left the internet and social media breaking lose after the 2022 FIFA World Cup final draw held in Doha on Friday, has produced a Group H membership comprising Ghana and Uruguay coming to face each other again after Luis Suarez’s handball eventually denied Ghana a maiden semi final birth at the World Cup in South Africa 2010.

Ghana and Uruguay met at the quarter finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa, where the two sides settled for a 1-1 draw after the 90 minutes of regular play, thanks to goals from Sulley Ali Muntari and Diego Forlan for Ghana and Uruguay respectively. Ghana forward Dominic Adiyea head into the Uruguayan net what would have been a last gasp winner for Ghana after additional time in the extra time. His header managed to be goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, but striker Luis Suarez punched the ball out of the post before the who circumference could cross the goal line.

Ironically, the match was being officiated by a Portuguese referee, Olegário Benquerença, who flashed a straight red card to Suarez and awarded a penalty to Ghana, which would later be blasted against the cross bar by Ghana’s marksman Asamoah Gyan. Uruguay proceeded to defeat Ghana 4-2 during the penalty shootouts to progress at the expends of the Black Stars, leaving Ghanaians and all lovers of the Black Stars across the globe heart broken.

Ghanaians have been all but reminded of the incident after Ghana and Uruguay were drawn into the same group at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and many Ghanaians have taken to social media to admonish the Black Stars to take a sweet revenge on behalf of the nation and Africa as whole against ‘The Sky Blues’.
