The final funeral rites for Christian Atsu, who died in February following the Turkey earthquake was held at the forecourt of the State House, Accra.

A burial and thanksgiving service was conducted at 9:00am before his mortal remains was taken to Dogobome in the Volta Region for interment.

There will be a family gathering later on Sunday, March 19 for the final funeral rites.

His family and friends including past and current Ghanaian footballers were present to pay their last respect to the former Chelsea and Newcastle United player during Friday’s service at the Forecourt of the State House saw.

Christian Atsu met his untimely death in February after a deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Syriar and Turkey with the southern city of Hatayspor hardest-hit.

After 12 days of search, the Ghanaian footballer’s body was found under the rubble of his apartment.

His body was brought back to Ghana on Sunday, February 19 via Turkish Airlines.

The 31-year-old Atsu played 65 times for the Black Stars and contributed 19 goals.

He also featured for European giants like FC Porto, Chelsea and Newcastle.

Until his death, he was a player of Turkey’s Hatayspor, whose officials are expected to be in town for the funeral service.
