Baba Rahman, Andy Yiadom and Kelvin Abrefa have suffered relegation from the English Championship with Reading FC.

Reading FC’s relegation to League One was confirmed following Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 win against Sheffield United on Thursday evening.

Royals needed the Blades to win the match at the John Smith’s Stadium to keep alive their slim Championship survival prospects.

That would have then taken the battle down to the final day on Monday afternoon when Noel Hunt’s side take on Town.

However, the match will now have no significance to the standings with Rotherham United and Cardiff City the closest sides to Reading in the table but five points ahead of them with just one game left to play.

Baba Rahman, who plays for the Royals on loan from Chelsea appeared in 18 games, with his last game coming in February due to an injury, while Andy Yiadom made 40 appearances.

Elsewhere, 19-year old Kelvin Abrefa, who represented Ghana at the 2022 Toulon tournament in France featured in 7 games.

Reading’s relegation means they will be playing in the third tier for the first time in 21 years. That last time they were in the division – which was then called Division Two – was in 2001/02 when they secured promotion under Alan Pardew.

Since then, 18 of those 21 seasons have been in the Championship (or Division One) while three were in the Premier League – 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2012/13.

Also in the two decades, they won the second tier twice, in 2005/06 with a record 106 points tally for the English Football League which still stands to this day, while they also lifted the trophy in 2011/12, a year after losing the play-off final.

Royals join Wigan Athletic and Blackpool in being relegated from the Championship this season.

The fixtures for League One will be released towards the end of June, while the campaign is set to start at the beginning of August. Exact dates will be confirmed in due course.
